
Durante la guerra que sostuvieron los clanes Tokugawa y Minamoto, denominada como guerra Gempei o Jishô-Juci durante el siglo XII.
Cuenta la historia que Yoshitune, príncipe del clan Minamoto se encontró con Benkei, un monje guerrero que custodiaba el paso de un puente.
Ante esta situación, ambos guerreros se vieron obligados a luchar entre si, el combate duró varias horas tras lo cual admirado Benkei por la destreza de Yoshitune, le pidió seguirle como su sirviente.
Ambos pasaron a la historia como ejemplo de caballerosidad, idealismo y lealtad del Bushido.
