
Inazo Nitobe muestra el Bushido como el código del samurai lleno de principios morales enseñado a los caballeros y que a su vez estos debían observar su perfecto cumplimiento.
El código en si no es un código escrito, sino que es el resultado de un crecimiento orgánico de décadas de siglos de carrera militar, llegando finalmente a ser considerado como la esencia del sentido ético y moral de un pueblo cuyos principios han marcado un hito en la historia del Japón feudal.
Cuando Yoritomo Minamotto 1º Shogun durante el periodo Kamakura instauró estos valores en la clase de guerreros profesionales conocidos como Samurais, los cuales se fueron trasmitiendo de padres a hijos dándoles una formación no solo militar sino también cultural, ética y moral ya que una vez superado el periodo militar, estos bushi estudiaron caligrafía (Shodo) y el arte del ceremonia del te (Chanoyu) principalmente.

Este valor y desapego a la vida se convirtieron en legendarios hasta el punto de que muchos emperadores romanos, escogían a los hispanos para su guardia personal.
Los bushi, constituyeron una casta impetuosa que hacía del combate su vocación, no obstante una vez conseguido los honores y privilegios en base a sus azañas, sintieron la necesidad de establecer una regla común de combate.
Dado que siempre estaban en pie de guerra los unos contra los otros debido principalmente a que pertenecían a clanes distintos, esta regla los hizo distinguirse del resto de la población a la vez que los obligaba a cumplirla fiel mente.
